The Japanese discovered Pai during the Second World War and built a road that is still in use today that connects Chiang Mai with Myanmar via Pai. The old route that the Japanese constructed while they were in control was hardly altered. They also crossed the Pai River from Chiang Mai using the old Naowarat Bridge. Pai had never before received guests from such a great distance.
